About MTI

The Maine Technology Institute (MTI) invests in promising technologies by funding research and development projects in the state's seven technology sectors. MTI's competitive awards bring new products, services and processes to the market, generating high-quality jobs across Maine.

MTI is a private, non-profit organization created and funded by the state of Maine. It is governed by a Governor-appointed Board of Directors made up of industry leaders and representatives of key public agencies.

Who is eligible for MTI programs? Businesses, non-rpofit organizations, academic institutions and entrepreneurs.

Legislation

The state-funded, private non-profit Maine Technology Institute "shall encourage, promote, stimulate and support research and development activity leading to the commercialization of new products and services in the State's technology-intensive industrial sectors to enhance the competitive position of those sectors and increase the likelihood that one or more of the sectors will support clusters of industrial activity and to create jobs for Maine people." (5MRSA 15302)

Goals

  • Offer robust, effective programs that fund innovative, technology based projects that lead to commercialization and job creation.
  • Continue to fill gaps for Maine businesses seeking early stage capital.
  • Build on networks and partnerships to enhance clusters of industrial activity.
  • Help ensure that Maine's strong support of research and development is linked to commercial outcomes that result in economic benefit.
  • Ensure adequate funding is available to fully support MTI's ability to help stimulate economic growth creating jobs for Maine people.
