Epidemiologist Linda Riddell created Gettin’ By to train teachers, doctors, case managers, and other professionals to work more effectively with clients who are experiencing poverty.
Many poverty simulation trainings focus on the hassle of coping with poverty, and they generally overlook how poverty affects thinking and decision-making. Closing the gap between what science knows and what professionals working with those in poverty do became Linda Riddell’s goal in creating the game and training program Gettin’ By. Gettin’ By uses real-world scenarios and brain science to simulate how poverty changes a person’s ability to process information and make logical decisions, impairing certain functions while enhancing others. The Gettin’ By Experience shows people the hidden side of poverty – the mental burden and how it reshapes decision-making and affects health.
