MTI Receives Champion of Economic Development Award from the Maine Development Foundation

September 30, 2010

On Friday, 9/24, Maine Technology Institute (MTI) was honored at the Maine Development Foundation Annual Meeting as a Champion of Economic Development. The award recognizes commitment to economic growth in Maine, ability to collaborate and create partnerships, high professional standards and innovativeness.

“As MTI receives this award, we acknowledge our Board members and our Technology Board members who contribute their leadership and over 5,000 volunteer hours every year, our partners across the state who help Maine businesses succeed, and the businesses and research organizations who work hard every day to innovate so that their businesses grow, add quality jobs and helping to sustain and grow Maine’s economy.” said Betsy Biemann, President of the Maine Technology Institute of the award. “We are honored to join the roster of Champions of Economic Development in Maine as we work together to fuel Maine’s economy for long term growth.”

Last week MTI was one of four national recipients of the Excellence in Technology-Based Economic Development Award from the State Science and Technology Institute (SSTI), a national nonprofit organization based in Ohio that leads efforts to improve state and regional economies through science, technology and innovation. MTI received the award for its Maine Technology Asset Fund (MTAF), a voter-approved $50 million bond funded program that supports research, development and commercialization of technologies that boost Maine’s economy and create high-paying jobs.

MTI is a publicly financed, private nonprofit organization created by the Legislature in 1999 to stimulate research and development activity leading to the commercialization of new products, processes and services in the state’s seven technology-intensive sectors. Programs are designed to enhance the competitive position of those sectors and increase the likelihood that one or more of the sectors will support clusters of industrial activity and create quality jobs across Maine.
